Case Study | Cathodic Protection

Barkly Square Cathodic Protection Project

Overview

The Barkly Square Shopping Centre is a key retail hub serving Melbourne’s inner north. Located on Sydney Road in Brunswick, approximately 4 km from the Melbourne CBD, the centre recently underwent a revitalisation project that included upgrading the in-ground substructure with a new Cathodic Protection system.

Australasian Corrosion Consultants (ACC) were engaged to replace the original system, which had been installed in 1985. The original anodes were fully consumed and replaced with four new horizontal anodes positioned between the foundation pilings. The two existing Cathodic Protection Rectifier Units (CPRUs) were also removed and replaced with a higher-capacity system located on the eastern side of the building.

Project Work

The works required horizontal drilling beneath the structure from the eastern car park to install steel sleeving that would house the new anode systems. The sleeves were driven into place using a horizontal pneumatic hammer in 6.5-metre sections, which were welded together to create a continuous length. The anodes were then installed inside the sleeves using a horizontal drill rig and a custom “Steel Bullet” mechanism developed by ACC.

Drilling operations were undertaken by R&R McClures Excavations Pty Ltd, with technical supervision and support provided by ACC.
