Case Study | Cathodic Protection
Majestic Building Façade Remediation
Overview
Australasian Corrosion Consultants (ACC) was engaged to design and install a cathodic protection system as part of the remediation works for the iconic Majestic Building, located on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda. The building’s façade comprises steel structural members encased in mortar and brickwork. Investigations revealed that corrosion of the embedded steel columns had led to cracking in the brickwork and significant deterioration of the façade.
To address these issues, ACC proposed a tailored solution involving the installation of a Duogard hybrid cathodic protection system, aimed at mitigating ongoing corrosion and preserving the structural integrity of the building.
Project Work
ACC supervised the installation of the Duogard hybrid cathodic protection system, which utilises discreet sacrificial anodes combined with an impressed current phase to achieve initial polarisation. Grout was pumped around the steel columns to create a uniform medium for optimal anode placement.
Installation of the anodes was carried out within the building façade by specialist abseilers under ACC’s supervision, ensuring precision and safety throughout the process. This remediation approach provided a durable and minimally invasive solution to extend the life of the structure while maintaining its heritage value.
