Case Study

NMIT Stray Traction Corrosion Investigation

Overview

Australasian Corrosion Consultants (ACC) was commissioned by the North Melbourne Institute of Technology to investigate the cause of accelerated failure within the copper water pipe network at their Epping campus. In collaboration with Energy Safe Victoria, ACC identified that stray traction currents originating from the adjacent rail network were causing a shift in pipework potential, resulting in stray traction corrosion.
This type of corrosion poses a significant risk to underground metallic infrastructure and requires coordinated mitigation efforts across multiple stakeholders.

Project Work

Following extensive testing and continuity bonding assessments, ACC worked alongside Energy Safe Victoria and other nearby asset owners to design an effective drainage system to manage and mitigate the impact of stray traction currents.
The success of this project relied heavily on cross-organisational collaboration, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility in protecting infrastructure from stray current corrosion. ACC also provided technical guidance throughout the process to ensure long-term asset resilience and compliance with safety standards.
