Case Study | Cathodic Protection

Norke Skog Boyer Paper Mill Cathodic Protection Installation

Overview

Australasian Corrosion Consultants (ACC) was commissioned by Norske Skog Tasmania to conduct a failure investigation on Section 1 of the Boyer Paper Mill Water Main. The failure occurred in December 2008, resulting in a 24-hour shutdown of the plant. The investigation revealed that the pipeline was installed in a highly corrosive environment and exhibited numerous coating defects along its length.
In response to these findings, ACC developed a detailed design for an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system in 2012. The system was intended to mitigate further corrosion and enhance the long-term integrity of the water main between Boyer Paper Mill and Pulpit Road.

Project Work

Following the completion of the design, ACC was awarded the contract to install and commission the ICCP system. The implementation aimed to significantly reduce corrosion activity and provide a robust mitigation strategy for the affected pipeline section.
As part of the broader project scope, ACC also delivered a tailored corrosion training course to Boyer staff. The training provided foundational knowledge on corrosion mechanisms and introduced best practices for asset protection, supporting the long-term durability and reliability of site infrastructure.
