Case Study
Rotary Park Wet Sewerage Well
Overview
Australasian Corrosion Consultants (ACC) was engaged to conduct condition assessments of the sewage wet well located in Rotary Park, Gisborne. Constructed circa 1999, the wet well has remained in continuous operation. The asset owner has maintained its serviceability through routine inspections, with ACC performing detailed evaluations in both 2010 and 2020. The primary objective of these inspections was to assess the remaining service life of the structure and identify any deterioration requiring remediation.
Project Work
The assessment was conducted in two key stages. First, visible concrete defects were identified, classified by type, and quantified across the accessible surfaces of the wet well. Second, diagnostic testing and sampling were carried out to evaluate the condition of the concrete and surrounding environment.
Due to the nature of the asset—a fully enclosed sewage wet well with limited access via two hatches—specialised confined space entry procedures were required. Prior to inspection, the well was evacuated and thoroughly cleaned to ensure safe and effective access. ACC implemented comprehensive safety measures including fresh air injection, a winch system, harnesses, and gas analysis equipment, all under the framework of Hazardous Work Permits.
